Comedy’s hour-long series finale to air Nov. 23

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/23/2012 -- Nickelodeon’s successful kids comedy “iCarly” ends its five-season run on Nov. 23 with an hour-long series final episode.

State joins several others in rejecting Obamacare participation

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/23/2012 -- Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, following the lead of several other Republican governors, has decided that Georgia will not set up it own health insurance exchange, leaving the decision up to the federal government.

In making the decision, Deal joined several other Republican governors in turning down the President Barack Obama administration’s model for state-run health insurance exchanges, known as Obamacare that is supposed to set in January 2014. Twenty states have rejected the plan

These state-run health insurance markets are designed to aid small business owners and individuals in locating affordable health insurance under federal regulations.

In a letter sent to President Obama, Deal wrote, “I remain concerned with the one-size-fits-all approach and high financial burden imposed on states by this federal mandate.”

There are a number of unknowns that are behind the mass rejection of Obamacare at the state level, such as the unknown federal regulations and unknown costs involved with the plan. Texas Governor Rick Perry, in his letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius rejecting the plan stated: “As long as the federal government has the ability to force unknown mandates and costs upon our citizens while retaining the sole power in approving what an exchange looks like, the notion of a state exchange is merely an illusion,” Perry wrote.

Not all states agree. In Mississippi, Insurance commissioner Mike Chaney went ahead with plans to establish exchange. He went on record that he does like the plan, stating, “I think it needs to be repealed. But it is the law. If you default to the federal government, you forever give the keys to the state’s health insurance market to the federal government.”

Other governors were more pointed in their rebuff of the plan. Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, both Republicans, stated in a joint letter to Obama: “States are struggling with many unanswered questions and are not able to make comprehensive far-reaching decisions prudently.”

At present, there had been a Nov. 16 deadline for deciding on the state-run exchanges. Jindal and McDonnell requested an extension of that deadline, which was agreed to by the Obama administration, which extended it until Dec. 14. However, the Jan. 1, 2014 date to launch the health care plan’s expanded coverage remains intact.

In his letter, Deal wrote that he felt that exchange would be “state-based in name only.”

He emphasized his point in stating, “I would support a free market-based approach that could serve as a useful tool for Georgia’s small businesses, but federal guidelines forbid that. Instead, restrictions on what the exchanges can and can’t offer render meaningless the suggestion that Georgia could tailor an exchange that best fits the unique needs of its population.”

Manpower Ministry will require much higher earnings for Personalised Employment Pass

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/23/2012 -- The Singapore-based Asia One News reports that nation’s Manpower Ministry is about to put in place new rules certain to make it substantially more difficult for top-level foreign professionals to obtain the most flexible form of work permit.

Starting December 1, the Singapore agency will raise the minimum monthly earnings threshold required for foreigners to apply for the Personalised Employment Pass. Instead of the previous thresholds of $3,000 to $8,000, depending on type of permit, new regulations will set the minimum monthly earnings threshold for the PEP at $12,000.

The increases in minimum earnings follow previous boost this January and in July of 2011, as well as other reworkings of the rules on foreign-worker eligibility. The Manpower Ministry says the latest changes, like those previously adopted, are aimed at improving the quality of Employment Pass holders. A statement on the Ministry’s website claimed the changes in the PEP are designed to see that it “remains a premium pass for top-tier foreign talent working in Singapore.

The Employment Pass is required for foreign professionals in managerial, executive or specialized jobs. The most-desired work pass, the Personalised Employment Pass, was created in 2007 in a bid to attract foreigners with exceptional work skills to Singapore.

It is much more flexible than other versions of an Employment Pass. With the PEP, workers are not tied to any particular employer. In addition, holders of the PEP can remain in Singapore even if unemployed for as much as six months. Under the standard Employment Pass, holders must leave the country if they are out of work for as little as 30 days.

In another change taking effect December 1, the PEP, formerly issued for a non-renewable period of five years, will be trimmed to three years. The Ministry says that, as of December 2011, Singapore had about 12,000 PEP holders, less than 7% of the total number of holders of all classes of Employment Passes. The Ministry explained the shorter duration for PEP holders as stemming from the view that top-level foreign workers should be able to find work and obtain a different category of Employment Pass.

Recruiting executive Andrea Ross, who serves as managing director for Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam for the consultant firm Robert Walters, says the changes may wind up driving top-level foreign workers out of Singapore and into jobs in neighboring nations. She also calls the changes in salary test rules “out of synch with the market."

David Ang, the Singapore Human Resources Institute’s executive director, observed that in Singapore’s slowing economy, the more restrictive PEP standards could become a moot issue for many employers there, since they are not likely to be able to afford costly foreign employees.

Rajat Gupta spoke in court with apology and regret

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/23/2012 -- The former director of Goldman Sachs, Indian-born Rajat Gupta, was sentenced to two years in prison today for insider trading.

Gupta spoke to the court for six minutes before his sentencing was handed down by U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff, expressing his genuine apologies for all of the people he negatively affected with his poor decision making. Gupta was indicted on security fraud and conspiracy, and with his sentence, was also slapped with a $5 million fine.

Gupta’s speech to the court was heartfelt and apologetic in tone: “The last 18 months have been the most challenging period of my life since I lost my parents as a teenager. I have lost my reputation that I have built over a lifetime.”

He continued, “the overwhelming feelings in my heart are of acceptance of what has happened, of gratitude to my family and friends, and of seeking forgiveness from them all. It is with these feelings that I hope to move forward and dedicate myself to the service of others.”

“Much of the first year seemed surreal to me, however, since the trial, I have come to accept the reality of my life going forward. I want to say here that I regret terribly the impact of this matter on my family, my friends and the institutions that are dear to me.”

Gupta stated, “I had the privilege of touching many lives in many fields. I mentored many young people, and many more view me as a role model. I served on many boards and many advisory positions with institutions that I hold in the highest regard.

“I have given a lot of thought to them during these last 18 months. These are extraordinary institutions and outstanding people, and I feel terrible that they have been burdened with totally undeserved negative attention. I apologize to them and ask for their forgiveness.

He noted the predicament of growing industry, stating, “These are very young institutions and in the early years of developing a reputation. I love these institutions as if they were my own children. I never want to hurt them in any way. Most importantly, I regret terribly any potential damage to their outstanding reputations.”

“My family has always meant the world to me. My brothers, sisters, in-laws, nephews and nieces have all surrounded me in these 18 months to comfort me and to give me courage. Every time I look at their faces, I get overcome with a deep sense of letting them down.”

“It is unbearable to me to see how much they have suffered. I just feel terribly that I have put them through this,” said Gupta.

After his prison sentence is up, Gupta will be under a one-year probation period in which he will be under full supervision.
